President Droupadi Murmu Celebrates Meghalaya’s Environmental Stewardship and Development Initiatives

Mawphlang:  In a momentous event, President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, graced a public meeting in Mawphlang, Meghalaya today, where she lauded the tribal communities for their exemplary role in environmental conservation rooted in indigenous knowledge and culture.

The President virtually inaugurated key infrastructure projects, showcasing the commitment to the state’s development. The upgraded Rongjeng Mangsang Adokgre Road and Mairang Ranigodown Azra Road, now operational, will significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility in the region. Furthermore, the foundation stones for the Shillong Peak Ropeway and new tourist accommodations in Kongthong, Mawlyngot, and Kudengrim were laid, ushering in a new era for tourism.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu acknowledged the deep-rooted connection of Meghalayan people with nature. She highlighted the tribal belief in ‘U Basa’ or goddess residing in the lush green forests, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature inherent in tribal practices. The President commended tribal lifestyles for contributing to national goals of biodiversity conservation and ecological balance.

President Murmu emphasized the pivotal role of women in environmental conservation and climate action. Citing documented evidence, she stated that women, particularly in tribal societies, have been at the forefront of conservation efforts, sharing their wisdom and skills. The President urged increased participation of women in climate initiatives and decision-making processes for more effective climate action and biodiversity conservation.

Expressing her satisfaction, President Murmu praised Meghalaya’s efforts to strike a balance between modernity and tradition. The state’s notable achievements, including robust foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, high exports, and a dynamic demography, position Meghalaya as a growth leader and an inspiring success story.

The President’s visit marks a significant acknowledgment of Meghalaya’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and inclusive growth.
