PM Modi Meets President Xi Jinping on the Sidelines of BRICS Summit

Kazan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a significant meeting with Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, during the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan today. This high-level dialogue comes in the wake of a recent agreement aimed at complete disengagement and resolution of outstanding issues stemming from the 2020 border clashes between India and China.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the critical importance of effectively managing differences and disputes to ensure they do not disrupt peace and tranquility in the region. He welcomed the progress made in bilateral discussions, which reflect a commitment to maintaining stability along the India-China border.

During their discussions, the two leaders agreed that the Special Representatives on the India-China boundary question will convene at an early date. Their objective will be to oversee the management of peace and tranquility in border areas while seeking a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution to the longstanding boundary dispute. They also recognized the necessity of leveraging existing dialogue mechanisms at the level of Foreign Ministers and other officials to further stabilize and rebuild bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Modi and President Xi affirmed that fostering stable, predictable, and amicable relations between India and China—two neighboring giants and the largest nations in the world—is essential for regional and global peace and prosperity. They noted that enhanced cooperation will contribute significantly to a multi-polar Asia and a multi-polar world.

The leaders highlighted the need to approach bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, enhancing strategic communication and exploring avenues for cooperation to tackle developmental challenges. This reflects a shared understanding of the benefits of collaboration in addressing issues such as economic growth, climate change, and regional stability.

As the discussions unfolded, both leaders reiterated their commitment to maintaining open lines of communication, which are vital for fostering trust and facilitating constructive engagement between their nations.

The meeting at the BRICS Summit underscores a crucial step towards repairing and strengthening ties between India and China, setting a positive tone for future interactions and collaborative efforts in the region and beyond.
