Over 3,800 Revenue Villages in Odisha Remain Without Mobile and Internet Connectivity

New Delhi: Despite significant advancements in digital infrastructure, 3,853 revenue villages in Odisha are still without mobile and internet connectivity, as revealed by Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar. The disclosure was made in response to a question posed by BJD MP Debashish Samantaray in the Rajya Sabha.

As of April 2024, Odisha has 51,176 villages, based on data from the Registrar General of India. Out of these, 47,323 villages have access to mobile coverage, with 46,050 enjoying 3G/4G connectivity. However, a substantial number of revenue villages, totaling 3,853, continue to lack any form of mobile or digital connectivity, the Union Minister acknowledged.

In terms of mobile subscribers, Odisha reported over 3.37 crore users as of March 2024, with 2.23 crore of them residing in rural areas. Additionally, the BharatNet project has made significant progress in the state, with 6,785 out of 6,788 Gram Panchayats (GPs) being service-ready as of July 2024.
