Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Ganesh Puja, Odisha’s traditional craftsmanship has found a dedicated showcase at Ekamra Haat, with the state government launching the first-ever State-Level Special Handicrafts Exhibition ‘Utkalaa: Shri Ganesh’ in the city.
Organised by the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts, the exhibition brings together 34 artisans from 16 districts, with 33 stalls showcasing a wide range of Ganesha-themed handicrafts. The exhibition will continue till September 13 and will remain open to visitors from 11 am to 9 pm.
Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta inaugurated the exhibition. Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the department Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar and other departmental officials were present.
The special attraction of the exhibition is its extensive collection of Ganesha idols and artworks made using traditional materials and techniques. Visitors can find creations in clay, wood, stone, terracotta, paddy, coconut coir, brass and bell metal, besides Ganesha artworks crafted on palm leaves and traditional Pattachitra works.
The exhibition has been timed to coincide with the upcoming Ganesh Puja and offers artisans an opportunity to display and sell their products directly to customers. The government expects increased sales during the event to contribute to higher earnings for participating artisans.
The exhibition is being organised under ‘Utkalaa’, the state’s branding initiative aimed at giving a distinctive identity to Odisha’s rich handloom, textile and handicraft traditions. The platform seeks to connect artisans directly with consumers through fairs and exhibitions, helping them access wider markets and strengthen their livelihoods.
The initiative also seeks to promote greater appreciation of the traditional knowledge and skills embedded in Odisha’s handicrafts. By encouraging consumers to purchase locally made products, the government aims to support artisan families while helping preserve the state’s cultural heritage.
The philosophy behind Utkalaa is centred on adopting local products and supporting local artisans, in line with the broader ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaigns.
The choice of Ganesha as the theme also carries a symbolic significance. While Lord Ganesha represents auspicious beginnings, wisdom, prosperity and the removal of obstacles, the government views Utkalaa as a new beginning for Odisha’s handicraft sector, creating stronger links between traditional artisans, consumers and markets.
With its mix of heritage crafts, festive products and direct sales, the exhibition is expected to provide both a cultural showcase and a commercial platform for Odisha’s artisan community.
