Odisha ULBs Asked to Step Up Sanitation, Safety Measures Ahead of Durga Puja

Bhubaneswar: The Housing and Urban Development Department has asked Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across Odisha to strengthen sanitation, drainage and public safety arrangements ahead of Durga Puja, with a forecast of rain due to a low-pressure system prompting additional preparedness measures.

The preparations were reviewed at a virtual meeting chaired by Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra. The meeting focused on ensuring clean, safe and well-maintained urban areas for devotees and the general public during the festive period.

Sanitation was identified as a key priority, with ULBs directed to maintain cleanliness and ensure proper sanitation facilities throughout the celebrations. The meeting also stressed the need to keep drainage systems functional and take preventive steps to minimise waterlogging in view of the expected rainfall.

The Minister underscored the importance of fire safety at Puja pandals and other public places. ULBs were also asked to ensure the availability of safe drinking water, repair potholes and damaged roads, and maintain functional streetlights and adequate illumination in public areas.

Coordination among departments and agencies was highlighted as essential for the timely delivery of civic services and a prompt response to any emerging situation. Control rooms will be established across districts to facilitate real-time monitoring, coordination and response during the festive period.

Emphasising the need for advance planning, Mahapatra said all ULBs must remain vigilant and ensure that necessary arrangements are completed well before the festivities begin.

“Public safety and cleanliness must remain our highest priorities. Our objective is to ensure that every citizen can celebrate Durga Puja in a safe, clean and healthy environment. All Urban Local Bodies must remain prepared, responsive and coordinated to make the festivities joyful and hassle-free for everyone,” the Minister said.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing and Urban Development Department Usha Padhee and Director of Municipal Administration Arindam Dakua attended the meeting.
