Odisha Special Relief Commissioner Urges Preparatory Measures as Cyclone ‘Remal’ Looms

Bhubaneswar: In response to the impending cyclonic threat looming over the central Bay of Bengal, the Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu has issued directives to the Collectors of four districts to initiate preparatory measures.

The SRC has instructed the District Collectors of Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj to remain on high alert and implement all necessary measures to tackle any potential challenges.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, a well-marked low-pressure area over west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal has progressed northeastwards and developed into a depression as of Friday morning. Projections suggest that it will continue its northeastward trajectory, intensifying into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25th.

Further developments indicate that the system will veer nearly northwards and escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by the night of May 25th. It is then expected to traverse nearly northwards, making landfall between Sagar Island and Khepupara along the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts around midnight on May 26.

Anticipating the impact, the SRC has warned of the possibility of wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 kmph accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall across the aforementioned districts of Odisha.
