New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Odisha on Wednesday projected itself as a key driver of India’s clean energy transition, outlining an ambitious roadmap to expand renewable energy capacity, modernise power infrastructure and position the state as a major hub for green hydrogen and sustainable industrial growth.
Presenting the state’s vision at the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition 2026 in New Delhi, Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo said Odisha is committed to becoming India’s “clean energy and green manufacturing engine” while contributing to the country’s long-term energy security and decarbonisation goals.
Organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), the conference focused on the themes “Empowering India’s Energy Future: Secure, Smart & Sustainable” and “Transitioning with Energy Security – The New Global Order.” The inaugural session was attended by Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi, Bhutan’s Energy Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering and Sri Lanka’s Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake.
Highlighting Odisha’s renewable energy roadmap, Singh Deo said the state has revised its target to add nearly 11 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, in line with India’s goal of achieving 60 per cent non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2035 and Net Zero emissions by 2070.
He said Odisha has already secured investment proposals worth around ₹67,000 crore for clean energy projects with a combined capacity of over 6.7 GW, covering solar, wind, hydroelectric, pumped storage and hybrid renewable energy systems.
To support the growing share of renewable energy, the state is modernising its electricity network through digital substations, smart grid technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled asset management systems to improve grid efficiency and reliability.
Singh Deo said Odisha’s 575-km coastline, deep-water ports and rich mineral resources provide a strong foundation for developing a green hydrogen ecosystem capable of supplying clean energy to industries such as steel, aluminium, mining and maritime transport. He said the state aims to emerge as a leading green hydrogen hub in South-East Asia.
The Deputy Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s efforts to ensure an inclusive energy transition through initiatives such as the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, decentralised solar power projects and green mobility programmes, which are expected to reduce electricity costs, create employment opportunities and support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Inviting global investors, technology providers and manufacturers to partner with Odisha, Singh Deo assured them of a stable policy environment, transparent governance and investor-friendly clearances. He said the state is committed to advancing the vision of Viksit Odisha 2036 and Viksit Bharat 2047 through secure, affordable and sustainable energy development.
Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Vishal Kumar Dev and other senior officials of the Energy Department also attended the conference.
