Bhubaneswar: Odisha is gearing up to unveil an exclusive Melanistic Tiger Safari near Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district, offering tourists and visitors a unique opportunity to witness the rare and majestic melanistic tigers found exclusively in the state.

Similipal National Park has been witness to sightings of black tigers or pseudo-melanistic tigers, characterized by a distinct dark stripe pattern against a lighter background of white or golden fur. Until now, these rare creatures have only been captured on camera within Similipal National Park.
In an official release issued by the PCCF (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, it was revealed that the Melanistic Tiger Safari, the first of its kind globally, will be established near Baripada in Mayurbhanj district.
A designated 200-hectare area adjacent to NH-18 has been identified for this groundbreaking initiative. Approximately 100 hectares will serve as the display area, while the remaining space will be utilized for creating veterinary care facilities, including a rescue center, staff infrastructure, and visitor amenities. The site, located about 15 km from Similipal Tiger Reserve, complements the reserve’s landscape.
Similipal Tiger Reserve is renowned as the only natural habitat for melanistic tigers globally, as per the last All India Tiger Estimation Report published by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in 2018.
The safari will house surplus tigers from Nandankanan Zoo and rescued/orphaned tigers unfit for the wild but suitable for display, in an open enclosure.
This pioneering initiative is expected to elevate wildlife tourism in Odisha, showcasing the state’s commitment to preserving and exhibiting its unique biodiversity. It aims to provide an opportunity for conservationists, researchers, enthusiasts, and the general public to witness the rare beauty of these majestic creatures up close, while simultaneously raising awareness about their conservation needs.
Situated near the National Highway and close to Baripada town, the site is anticipated to attract an impressive number of visitors. Additionally, it will serve as an added attraction for those visiting Similipal Tiger Reserve.
The State Government’s proposal for this project has received “in-principle” approval from the Technical Committee of NTCA. A committee to be formed by NTCA will conduct a feasibility study at the site before granting final approval. Other statutory clearances, including CZA approval, will follow suit.
