Odisha Seeks Centre’s Support for Maritime Development and World-Class Maritime Institute

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Minister for Commerce & Transport and Steel & Mines, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, has called for the Centre’s support in developing the state’s ports, maritime infrastructure, and establishing a world-class maritime institute or university. Speaking at the 20th Maritime State Development Council meeting in Goa, organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Jena reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to advancing its maritime sector in alignment with India’s broader maritime vision.

Minister Jena emphasized the importance of sustainability and modernisation in the maritime sector. He outlined Odisha’s alignment with the Centre’s Harit Nauka Guidelines, which promote the adoption of green fuels and environmentally sustainable practices. In a notable initiative, Odisha plans to introduce a 20-seater solar-electric boat in Chilika Lake and retrofit 2,696 registered boats with solar-electric hybrid technology to reduce emissions and promote clean energy.

Jena also highlighted the strategic importance of Odisha’s 480 km coastline and urged the Ministry to support the development of a Major Port, a Cruise Terminal, and a Marina to boost tourism and enhance maritime connectivity along India’s eastern coast. Additionally, he requested assistance in developing fishing harbors, jetties, and shifting inland vessels to green fuel alternatives, which would enhance both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

One of the key proposals put forward was the establishment of a state-of-the-art maritime institute or university in Odisha. Minister Jena emphasized the need for skilled human resources to meet the growing demands of the maritime industry, and expressed hope that the Centre would extend full cooperation to make this vision a reality.
