Odisha Proposes Innovative Solutions for Fly Ash Management

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to promote sustainable development, Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Empowerment, and Energy, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, unveiled innovative strategies for managing waste generated by the Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC). The proposals were discussed during a review meeting held at Lok Seva Bhavan on Wednesday.

According to an official press release, Singh Deo suggested utilizing fly ash for producing eco-friendly bricks to support housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. He also proposed transforming fly ash-filled ponds into tourism hubs, aligning with the state’s efforts to boost sustainable practices.

Highlighting the potential use of fly ash in agriculture, Singh Deo stressed the need for consultations with the Pollution Control Board to ensure environmental safety. He announced plans to introduce a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for efficient fly ash management soon.

To tackle pollution concerns, the Deputy Chief Minister recommended identifying abandoned mines for fly ash disposal and emphasized allocating additional space for ash ponds. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari supported the move, advising local consultations to identify suitable locations for such facilities.

The meeting saw active participation from Principal Secretary of the Energy Department Vishal Dev, Jharsuguda Collector Aboli Sunil Naravane, and senior OPGC officials.

OPGC, which supplies 30% of Odisha’s electricity, reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable waste management and environmental protection. The proposed initiatives are expected to set a benchmark in integrating waste management with developmental goals, ensuring ecological balance alongside economic growth.
