Bhubaneswar, April 23, 2025: In view of the ongoing severe heatwave sweeping across the state, the Odisha Higher Education Department has announced the closure of all universities and colleges for students starting April 23, until further notice. The decision, aimed at safeguarding students from the extreme weather, was communicated through an official notification issued on Wednesday.
According to the order, while students are exempted from attending classes during this period, all teaching and non-teaching staff are required to report to duty as per the regular schedule outlined in the common academic calendar. The government has clarified that ongoing and upcoming examinations will continue as scheduled, with necessary arrangements to ensure the safety and comfort of students appearing for them.
Hostel facilities will also remain open, allowing students the option to stay on campus if they choose to do so. Authorities have been directed to make appropriate accommodations for students residing in hostels and for those attending examinations during the heatwave.
The announcement follows a broader directive issued by the Mohan Charan Majhi-led state government, which had earlier declared summer vacation for all government and private educational institutions — from anganwadi centres and pre-schools to Class XII — beginning April 23.
Officials reiterated that while regular classes are suspended, academic responsibilities will continue for staff members, and the academic calendar will be maintained without disruption. The state government has emphasized its commitment to student welfare while ensuring minimal academic impact during this challenging period.
