Bhubaneswar: In a significant move aimed at transforming Cuttack into a more livable and modern urban center, the Odisha government has unveiled a slew of development projects, including the construction of a mega convention centre, a new park, and improved civic infrastructure.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed the developmental roadmap for Cuttack and its adjoining areas in a high-level meeting with Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab at Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar on Monday. The meeting focused on accelerating infrastructure projects to enhance quality of life and urban amenities in the historic Silver City.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), a mega convention centre is planned to be built in Cuttack, along with a designated vending zone near OMP Square and a new public park at Press Chhak. These initiatives are designed to improve public utility spaces and promote organized urban growth.
Addressing long-standing concerns related to urban flooding, the government is also considering the preparation of a comprehensive master plan to overhaul the city’s drainage system.
In addition to urban infrastructure, the state is planning major developmental works in the broader Cuttack district. This includes the construction of a new barrage over the Mahanadi river to ensure better water management and flood control, and the integrated development of Satyabhamapur—the birthplace of Utkal Gourab Madhusudan Das—to promote heritage tourism and local pride.
The revival of industrial assets is also on the agenda, with the state government initiating steps to rejuvenate the defunct Baramba Sugar Mill and Bhagatpur Cotton Mill in the district, signaling a push toward rural industrial revival and employment generation.
“The Chief Minister has directed officials to fast-track the implementation of all these projects. The state government is firmly committed to the all-round development of Cuttack and its surrounding areas,” the CMO said.
The meeting was attended by top officials including Development Commissioner Anu Garg, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Hemant Sharma, and Principal Secretary to the CM Saswat Mishra, among others.
