Odisha Govt Launches Enquiry into Puri Stampede Tragedy

Bhubaneswar: The Government of Odisha has ordered a high-level enquiry into the tragic stampede incident that occurred near the Gundicha Temple in Puri on June 29, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of three devotees. The decision was announced through a notification (No-1389/C) issued by the Home (Special Section) Department on the same day. The enquiry will be conducted by the Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha.

In a public appeal, the government has urged any person or organisation possessing information or evidence, including video footage, regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, to come forward. Citizens can share such details in person at the office of the Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary at Lok Seva Bhawan, Bhubaneswar, or via email at [email protected]. The deadline for submitting information has been set for July 20, 2025, excluding government holidays.

To ensure wider public participation, the government has scheduled two public hearings. The first will be held at the State Guest House in Bhubaneswar on July 9, 2025, starting from 3:00 PM, and the second at the Special Circuit House in Puri on July 10, 2025, also from 3:00 PM onwards. These hearings aim to collect testimonies and statements from witnesses and concerned citizens who may have insights into the events that led to the stampede.
