Bhubaneswar: In a move aimed at providing social security, the Odisha government has announced a one-time ex-gratia benefit of ₹1 lakh for the next of kin of Cook-Cum-Helpers engaged in government schools under the PM POSHAN scheme in the event of their death during service.
A notification issued by the School and Mass Education Department stated that the ex-gratia amount would be disbursed directly to the bank accounts of the claimant(s) through RTGS/NEFT, ensuring a seamless transfer process. The expenditure for this benefit will be covered under the State Budget, specifically allocated for supporting the PM POSHAN programme.
The PM POSHAN scheme, a centrally sponsored initiative, is being implemented in Odisha to improve the nutritional status of children studying in Classes I to VIII in government and government-aided schools. The role of Cook-Cum-Helpers is crucial in ensuring the effective delivery of the programme, which has been a significant factor in improving child nutrition across the state.
This decision by the state government, effective immediately, is seen as a step toward recognizing the contributions of Cook-Cum-Helpers and safeguarding their families against uncertainties. By providing this financial support, the government aims to alleviate the hardships faced by families in the event of the untimely loss of a loved one.
