Odisha FC Stages Dramatic Comeback to Beat Bengaluru FC 3-2 in ISL Thriller

Bengaluru: Odisha FC ended their four-match winless streak in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Bengaluru FC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday night. Diego Mauricio scored twice from the penalty spot, while Jerry Mawihmingthanga netted the decisive goal in an intense encounter.

The match began with Bengaluru FC in command, racing to a 2-0 lead within the first 13 minutes. Edgar Mendez opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a pinpoint long ball from Suresh Wangjam allowed the Spaniard to calmly slot past Odisha’s goalkeeper Amrinder Singh. Just three minutes later, Sunil Chhetri doubled the lead with a dazzling solo effort, weaving past Odisha’s defense to find the top corner.

Odisha struggled early but found their footing when Bengaluru’s Aleksandar Jovanovic was sent off in the 26th minute for a foul on Mauricio inside the penalty area. Mauricio converted the resulting spot-kick, reducing the deficit to 2-1. The visitors drew level in the 38th minute after Roshan Singh handled the ball in the box, allowing Mauricio to score his second penalty of the night.

The momentum swung further in Odisha’s favor in the second half. With a one-man advantage, the Juggernauts pressed forward relentlessly. In the 50th minute, Jerry Mawihmingthanga capitalized on a precise cross from Hugo Boumous, scoring the eventual winner.

Bengaluru FC, despite being a man down, fought valiantly. Ryan Williams delivered a series of dangerous crosses, but the Odisha defense held firm. Bengaluru manager Gerard Zaragoza made multiple substitutions, including introducing Nikhil Poojary and Sivasakthi Narayanan, but his side failed to find the equalizer.

Odisha’s coach Sergio Lobera brought on fresh legs, including Dorielton Gomes, to secure the lead. The Blues piled on the pressure in the closing minutes but lacked the composure to convert their chances, allowing Odisha to claim a vital away victory.

Bengaluru FC will next face Mohun Bagan Super Giant on January 27, while Odisha FC hosts NorthEast United FC on February 3.
