Odisha Expands List of Approved Handicrafts to Boost Artisan Support

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to bolster Odisha’s vibrant handicraft sector, the state’s Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts Department has granted official recognition to 55 distinct handicrafts, expanding from an earlier list of 51. This decision, approved by the Minister of Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles & Handicrafts, Pradip Bal Samanta, and recommended by Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhi, Principal Secretary, will open new opportunities for artisans across the state.

The revised list of recognized handicrafts encompasses a diverse array of traditional crafts, including Applique, Bamboo Craft, Dhokra Casting, Golden Grass, Jaikhadi Works, Pattachitra, Silver Filigree, and Stone Carving, among others. Each craft represents a unique aspect of Odisha’s cultural heritage, showcasing the artistic talents of local communities and their mastery over various materials such as wood, bamboo, brass, coir, and natural fibers.

This expanded list aims to bring greater visibility and support to artisans involved in these crafts, providing a structured foundation for their socio-economic growth. Special attention will be given by the state government to foster the holistic development of these recognized handicrafts. Initiatives include the provision of necessary resources, skill development, and financial support to artisans under existing regulations and guidelines.

Pranati Chhotray, Director of Handicrafts, Odisha, emphasized that the inclusion of new crafts will not only support the artisans but also help preserve Odisha’s rich cultural legacy. This initiative aligns with the state’s ongoing efforts to empower artisans by promoting sustainable livelihoods and facilitating their access to new markets.
