Odisha Emerges as Top Winner in 5th National Water Awards 2023

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has secured the top position in the prestigious 5th National Water Awards 2023, announced by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Uttar Pradesh claimed second place, while Gujarat and Puducherry jointly took the third spot. The awards recognize outstanding contributions to water conservation and management across India in nine categories.

The award ceremony, scheduled for October 22, 2024, will be presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, where Odisha’s exemplary achievements in water conservation will be celebrated.

Odisha’s impressive accomplishments include the construction of over 53,000 water conservation and rainwater harvesting structures, the renovation of 11,000 traditional water bodies, and the establishment of 21,000 wastewater treatment plants. These initiatives have transformed more than 90,900 hectares of land into micro-irrigation systems, directly benefiting around 87,000 farmers. In addition, the state has completed the plantation of 9 crore saplings, further bolstering its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti praised Odisha’s efforts, noting that its comprehensive approach to water management and conservation has set a benchmark for other states. Through large-scale projects aimed at preserving water resources, the state has not only supported agriculture but has also played a critical role in combating climate change and enhancing ecosystem resilience.

As the country continues to grapple with water scarcity and environmental concerns, Odisha’s success story highlights the importance of sustainable water practices and the positive impact such initiatives can have on communities and the environment.
