Odisha Cold Storage Policy Gains Momentum with Entrepreneurial Backing

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to bolster the state’s agricultural infrastructure and reduce post-harvest losses, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment convened a key discussion with members of the Odisha Cold Storage Association and aspiring cold storage entrepreneurs. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary of the department, was held at the conference hall of Krushi Bhawan in Bhubaneswar.

The deliberations centered around the state government’s newly introduced cold storage policy, aimed at transforming Odisha’s agri-value chain by encouraging private investment in modern cold storage facilities. Entrepreneurs from across the state attended the session and shared their perspectives on how the policy would play a pivotal role in preserving perishable produce, minimizing wastage, and strengthening the agricultural economy.

Members of the Odisha Cold Storage Association commended the initiative and offered constructive feedback to make the policy more accessible and entrepreneur-friendly. Dr. Padhee welcomed these suggestions, stating that the department is committed to incorporating feasible inputs from stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation.

“This policy is designed not only to promote scientific storage solutions but also to empower agricultural entrepreneurs,” said Dr. Padhee. “We will extend all possible support to eligible entrepreneurs. I encourage them to apply through the GO-SUGAM Portal to avail financial assistance and incentives provided by the government.”

Highlighting the growing interest in the sector, Dr. Padhee informed that 82 entrepreneurs from 25 districts have already registered on the GO-SUGAM Portal. The process of project approval and implementation is expected to begin shortly.

This strategic push aligns with Odisha’s vision to create a robust cold chain infrastructure, enabling farmers to store and market their produce efficiently while ensuring better prices and reduced wastage. The initiative is expected to generate rural employment, strengthen farm incomes, and contribute to the sustainable growth of the agriculture sector.
