Odisha to Host National Short Film Festival ‘Samarthya-2026’ Celebrating Ability, Inclusion and Resilience

Bhubaneswar: Seeking to amplify the voices and achievements of persons with disabilities through the power of storytelling, the Odisha Government has announced “Samarthya-2026,” a national-level short film festival that will bring inspiring real-life stories of determination and success to the forefront.

The festival, being organised by the Department of Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD), aims to encourage filmmakers to create impactful films that challenge stereotypes, promote inclusivity and highlight the capabilities of persons with disabilities. This year’s edition revolves around the theme, “Success Stories of Persons with Disabilities.”

The festival was formally unveiled during a press conference in Bhubaneswar attended by officials of the SSEPD Department, eminent film personalities, jury members and panel experts. RR Events and Cine Production has been entrusted with organising and executing the event.

Entries have been invited from filmmakers, producers, directors, media students and independent creators from across the country. Each short film should have a maximum duration of five minutes and must portray the inspiring journey of a successful person with a disability.

To ensure universal accessibility, the organisers have made it mandatory for every film to include audio description, sign language interpretation, and subtitles or closed captions. The move is intended to make the festival inclusive for audiences with diverse accessibility needs.

Interested participants can submit their films through the official website, www.shortfilmfestodisha.in, with July 7, 2026, set as the last date for entries. A distinguished jury will evaluate the films on July 8, while the winners will be announced on July 11. The selected films will be screened during the festival, with awards to be presented in both national and Odisha categories. Every participant will also receive a certificate.

Officials said the festival is designed not only to recognise cinematic excellence but also to celebrate the resilience, talent and achievements of persons with disabilities. By bringing such stories to a wider audience, Samarthya-2026 aims to foster greater awareness, encourage inclusive thinking and reinforce the message that disability is no barrier to success.
