Bhubaneswar: In a landmark development for the healthcare sector in Odisha, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Bagchi Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Institute today in Bhubaneswar. The hospital, established in collaboration with the prestigious Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Bangalore, is a pivotal initiative by philanthropists Subrata Bagchi and Sushmita Bagchi to elevate cancer treatment facilities in the state.
With a capacity of 750 beds, the hospital is equipped with advanced medical infrastructure, can accommodate 300 patients daily, providing cutting-edge radiotherapy and chemotherapy for over 150 patients.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, at the inauguration ceremony, expressed optimism that the hospital would usher in a new era of cancer treatment, offering quality and affordable care to patients not only in Odisha but also across East India. He emphasized that approximately one-third of the state’s cancer patients would benefit from this facility.
Acknowledging the Bagchi family and Shankar Cancer Center for their pivotal role in this healthcare initiative, CM highlighted his government’s persistent efforts to enhance healthcare in the state.
Speaking about cancer services in the state, Patnaik assured arrangements for cancer treatment in various districts. He urged citizens to be vigilant about diseases like cancer and emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle in preventing such illnesses. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that a healthy populace would contribute to realizing the vision of a ‘Healthy Odisha, Happy Odisha.’
Subrata Bagchi stated that the hospital became a reality due to the state government’s support, including providing 22 acres of land. He emphasized that cancer patients in Odisha could now access world-class medical facilities locally.
The hospital, constructed at a cost of Rs 410 crore, boasts advanced infrastructure, modern medical technology, and treatment facilities. Affiliated with the state government’s Biju Health Welfare Scheme, the hospital ensures patients receive the latest and most effective medical care from reputed doctors and nursing staff specializing in cancer care.
