Odisha Announces 16 New NACs, 7 Municipalities for Improved Civic Governance

Bhubaneswar: Expanding the reach of urban governance, the Odisha government has announced the creation of 16 new Notified Area Councils (NACs) and 7 new municipalities across the state. The decision was made public by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the Local Self-Governance Day celebrations held at the Railway Auditorium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

The Chief Minister said the move would enable better planning, infrastructure development, and access to civic services in fast-growing towns and semi-urban regions. He stressed that the government’s priority is to bring administrative support closer to the people and ensure balanced urban growth.

The newly declared NACs will be established in:

  • Balangir: Loisingha

  • Bargarh: Sohela

  • Cuttack: Badamba, Narasinghpur, Salepur

  • Dhenkanal: Gondia

  • Ganjam: Jagannathprasad, Patrapur

  • Jajpur: Chandikhole

  • Kalahandi: Narla, Jayapatna

  • Khordha: Tangi

  • Koraput: Borigumma

  • Mayurbhanj: Kaptipada, Jashipur, Rasgovindpur

Similarly, 7 new municipalities will be set up in:

  • Mayurbhanj: Karanjia

  • Boudh: Boudh

  • Ganjam: Bhanjanagar, Aska, Chhatrapur, Kabisuryanagar, Polasara

According to officials, these new urban bodies will strengthen grassroots governance by offering more efficient services in sanitation, water supply, waste management, and road connectivity. They are also expected to promote planned development and greater citizen participation in governance.
