Odisha Accelerates Green Mobility with 100 New Electric Buses, Expands Network in Twin Cities and Puri

Bhubaneswar: In a bold push towards clean and efficient urban transportation, Odisha’s Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) is set to roll out 100 new electric buses, further electrifying the public transport fleet across Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri. With this addition, the state’s total e-bus count will rise to 280, significantly enhancing route coverage, frequency, and passenger convenience.

These new electric buses will serve both existing and eight newly introduced routes, ensuring smoother connectivity for daily commuters across the capital region. The initiative is aimed at reducing carbon emissions while improving last-mile access to public transport in key urban and suburban pockets.

The expanded fleet will operate out of the newly developed Naraj Electric Bus Depot, a cutting-edge facility spanning 8.01 acres and constructed at a cost of ₹50.16 crore. The depot is equipped with modern amenities such as high-capacity charging stations, bus-washing systems, repair bays, and designated parking areas. Officials describe it as one of the most advanced e-bus depots in India, capable of supporting a sustainable, all-electric transit system.

With an estimated operational outlay of ₹500 crore over the next decade, CRUT is strengthening its efforts to build a robust and eco-friendly public transport network. Presently, CRUT manages a fleet of 560 buses, including 180 electric buses, and caters to over three lakh riders daily.

This expansion is part of a larger roadmap under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme, under which Odisha plans to introduce 400 more electric buses in the coming months. The initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of developing low-carbon, resilient cities and promoting green infrastructure.
