NTPC Signs Land Lease Agreement for India’s Largest Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam: India’s largest integrated power company, NTPC Limited, a key player in the power sector, has taken a significant step towards realizing its green energy and green hydrogen objectives. NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a fully-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, signed a Land Lease Agreement on 20th February, 2024, with Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) for the development of an “Integrated Green Hydrogen Hub.”

The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub, spanning 1,200 acres near Pudimadaka village in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, aims to create a world-class ecosystem for cutting-edge technologies in the new energy paradigm. The hub will include facilities for electrolyzer and fuel cell manufacturing, ancillary industries, startup incubation, testing facilities, and the production and export of green hydrogen derivatives such as green ammonia and green methanol.

The centerpiece of the project is the construction of India’s largest green hydrogen production facility, capable of producing 1,200 tons per day. This facility will facilitate the conversion of green hydrogen into derivatives, primarily targeting various export markets.

The Land Lease Deed was exchanged between Shri Sivakumar V. V., Chief General Manager of NGEL, and Shri Pravin Kumar, Vice-Chairman & Managing Director of APIIC, at the Government of Andhra Pradesh Secretariat in Amravati. The ceremony witnessed the presence of Shri K S Jawahar Reddy, Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh; Shri R Sarangapani, Executive Director of NTPC; and other senior officials.

The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub aligns with the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a mission approved by the Union Cabinet on 4th January 2023, with an allocated outlay of ₹19,744 crores. The mission seeks to position India as the global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

NTPC, with a total installed capacity of 74 GW, is India’s largest power utility and is actively expanding its renewable energy portfolio. NGEL, the subsidiary dedicated to renewable energy projects, including green hydrogen initiatives, plays a crucial role in NTPC’s commitment to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. Currently, NTPC has 3.4 GW of installed renewable energy capacity, with over 22 GW in the pipeline, reaffirming its dedication to supporting Andhra Pradesh’s and India’s decarbonization goals.
