Bhubaneswar: Renowned economist and Nobel Laureate Dr. Michael Kremer, celebrated for his work on “Empirical Approaches to Alleviating World Poverty,” visited Odisha to deliver a lecture at Lok Seva Bhavan. The event, organized by the Planning and Coordination Department, brought together administrative officers, academicians, students, and researchers to engage with Dr. Kremer’s transformative ideas and practical insights.
Currently a Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago, Dr. Kremer’s research spans innovation in education, health, water, finance, and agriculture. His work focuses on leveraging social innovation funds to structure institutions that foster sustainable development.
In his presentation, “Empirical Approach, Innovation and Economics,” Dr. Kremer highlighted several impactful initiatives. Among them, his research on school-based deworming programs contributed to the establishment of National Deworming Day in India, significantly improving child health outcomes nationwide.
Dr. Kremer also shed light on the potential of digital weather forecasting for farmers, illustrating how providing precise weather advice can yield returns up to ten times the cost of dissemination. Furthermore, he emphasized the critical role of safe drinking water in reducing child mortality, citing studies that revealed a 25% decrease in diarrhoea rates through the chlorination of tap water.
He also stressed the importance of individualized learning to bridge educational disparities and the need to address air pollution as a means to improve educational outcomes. Dr. Kremer outlined a systematic innovation cycle that includes identifying problems, consulting stakeholders, conducting focus groups, and pilot-testing solutions for broader implementation.
The session was attended by key state officials, including Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner Anu Garg, and District Collectors from all 30 districts, who joined via video conferencing. Chief Secretary Ahuja emphasized Odisha’s commitment to efficient governance, with a vision to achieve significant development milestones for the state by 2036 and for India by 2047, leveraging data analytics and sustainable systems.
Dr. Kremer’s visit served as an inspiration, highlighting practical pathways to tackle pressing issues like health, education, and agricultural challenges while reaffirming Odisha’s focus on fostering innovation and sustainable growth.
