NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Hidden Camera Incident in Andhra Pradesh Girls’ Hostel

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports concerning a disturbing incident at an engineering college in Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, where over 300 photos and videos were allegedly captured from the girls’ hostel washroom using a hidden camera. The situation came to light when a group of students discovered the camera, prompting a major protest at the college. Allegedly, some students in the boys’ hostel purchased these videos, leading to the questioning of a suspect by the police.

This incident follows a similar case earlier this month in Bengaluru, where a hidden camera was found in the washroom of a popular eatery.

The NHRC, expressing grave concern, stated that if the reports are accurate, they represent a serious violation of human rights. The Commission emphasized the failure of the authorities to provide a safe and secure environment for women, calling it a matter of significant concern.

In response, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of both Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, demanding a detailed report. This report must include the status of the FIR filed by the police and outline the steps taken or proposed by authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future. The NHRC expects a response within two weeks.
