NHRC Inaugurates Winter Internship 2024 for Postgraduate Students

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has commenced its prestigious Winter Internship Programme – 2024 for postgraduate students. The four-week in-person internship, which began today, has drawn participation from 80 students across various academic disciplines, carefully selected from over 1,000 applicants nationwide.

Inaugurating the programme, NHRC Acting Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani encouraged the interns to play an active role in shaping the future of human rights in India. She emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive society where equal access to rights and opportunities is ensured, leaving no one behind. Highlighting India’s journey towards becoming a global leader, she underscored that this path is as much about economic growth as it is about upholding justice, inclusivity, and compassion.

Addressing the interns, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal congratulated them on their selection and urged them to make the most of this opportunity. He called upon the participants to develop a sense of empathy for societal challenges and respond with sensitivity. He stressed the need to internalize the constitutional values of equality, justice, liberty, and fraternity, encouraging them to contribute actively to protecting human rights for all.

Providing an overview of the internship, NHRC Joint Secretary Shri Devendra K. Nim outlined the Commission’s role and various initiatives in promoting and safeguarding human rights. He noted that the internship includes interactive sessions, group research projects, and book reviews, all aimed at equipping students with a comprehensive understanding of human rights issues and solutions.

During the programme, students will gain insights into human rights challenges through expert lectures and field visits to various institutions. These visits are designed to provide exposure to ground realities and the mechanisms necessary to safeguard human rights for all segments of society.

A stipend of ₹12,000 will be awarded to interns who successfully complete the programme.
