
Bhubaneswar: The Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar witnessed intense action in the Women’s FIH Hockey Pro League, where the defending champions, the Netherlands, secured a hard-fought victory against a resilient Chinese team, while Australia showcased dominance against the United States.
In a closely contested battle, the Dutch women faced a formidable challenge from an improving Chinese side but managed to secure a 3-1 victory. The Chinese team executed their plans brilliantly in the first half, repeatedly penetrating the Dutch center channel. Despite their efforts, missed opportunities cost China dearly. Zhong Jiaqi did give China the lead with a skillful shot in the second quarter, but Freeke Moes equalized for the Netherlands. Marijn Veen added another goal, giving the Dutch a 2-1 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Netherlands tightened their defense and extended their lead, with Moes securing a two-goal cushion. Despite China’s positive play, they couldn’t capitalize on opportunities, and the match ended 3-1 in favor of the Netherlands.
In the second match of the day, Australia showcased dominance against the USA, securing a convincing 3-0 win. Tatum Stewart opened the scoring in the first quarter with a powerful drag flick, setting the tone for Australia’s control in the first half. Stephanie Kershaw extended the lead in the second quarter, displaying resilience against defenders to secure a 2-0 advantage at halftime. While the USA showed improvement in the second half, Australia continued to dominate, with Grace Stewart adding a third goal through an excellent deflection. Despite facing pressure in the final quarter with two yellow cards, the Hockeyroos held firm, and the USA couldn’t capitalize on the numerical advantage.
