Navdeep Makes History with Gold in Paralympic Javelin Throw

Paris: Indian para-athlete Navdeep has etched his name in history by winning a gold medal in the Men’s Javelin Throw F41 category at the Paralympic Games. His personal best throw of 47.32 metres earned India its seventh gold medal in Paris, marking a significant milestone for the nation.

Navdeep, who initially secured the silver medal, saw his medal upgraded to gold after Iranian athlete Beit Sayah Sadegh was disqualified for violating Rule 8.1 of the World Para Athletics Rules and Regulations, which governs the integrity, ethics, and fair conduct in para-athletics. Sadegh had set a Paralympic record of 47.65 metres, but his disqualification paved the way for Navdeep’s triumph.

The victory is historic for India as it is the country’s first-ever gold medal in the Men’s Javelin F41 category at the Paralympic Games. Navdeep’s win also boosted India’s overall medal tally to 29, with 7 gold, 9 silver, and 13 bronze medals.

Navdeep’s path to gold was marked by determination. He started the competition with a foul but quickly recovered, launching a 46.39-metre throw on his second attempt and then a personal best of 47.32 metres on his third. Despite a few more fouls, his third throw proved enough to secure the top spot. China’s Sun Pengxiang claimed silver with a 44.72-metre throw, while Iraq’s Wildan Nukhailawi was awarded the bronze with a distance of 40.46 metres.

Navdeep, a 24-year-old from Panipat, Haryana, has overcome the challenges of his short stature to excel in sports. Inspired by his father, a national-level wrestler, Navdeep started his journey in athletics before focusing solely on javelin throw. His rise began in 2017 when he won gold at the Asian Youth Para Games, and he has since claimed multiple national titles and international honors, including a gold at the 2021 Fazza International Championship in Dubai.
