New York: In a groundbreaking development for cricket enthusiasts in the United States, the construction of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York is well underway, signaling a new era for the sport in the country. The 34,000-seat modular stadium, a first-of-its-kind for cricket, is set to be completed in just three months, making it ready to host eight matches at the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is gearing up to be a cricket spectacle, featuring premium and general admission seating, VIP and hospitality suites, a unique party deck, and cabanas. The stadium’s design emphasizes sustainability, with the grandstands repurposed from the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, showcasing an eco-friendly approach to sports infrastructure.
Renowned architectural firm Populous, known for iconic stadiums like the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, is leading the design of this ambitious project. As the architect of record for both the New York Yankees and New York Mets, Populous brings a wealth of experience to the table.
ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice expressed excitement about the project, stating, “We are excited to be unveiling the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. It is an incredibly important milestone in the lead-up to the biggest ICC event ever.”
The stadium promises not only to cater to cricket enthusiasts but also to offer a world-class experience for all guests. Alongside the thrilling matches, the venue will feature a dedicated fan zone, a variety of food and beverage outlets, and state-of-the-art media and broadcast areas.
The wicket, a drop-in square similar to those used at Adelaide Oval and Eden Park, is currently being curated in Florida and is expected to be transported to New York in early May. Located 30 miles east of Manhattan, the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium boasts excellent transport and parking facilities, with three train stations available in the vicinity.
Cricket fans will have the unique opportunity to be part of history by attending a festival of cricket and witnessing the world’s best players in action. The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is set to host eight T20 World Cup matches, kicking off with the clash between Sri Lanka and South Africa on June 3.
