Bhubaneswar: Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, is set to chair the Monsoon Meet for the Animal Husbandry and Dairy sector on September 13, 2024, at the Convention Center, Lok Seva Bhavan in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The event will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, with Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, and Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Minority Affairs, George Kurian, also in attendance.

Organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, the Monsoon Meet aims to align expectations of States and Union Territories (UTs) with a convergence framework for effective program implementation. The meeting will review the progress of ongoing schemes, discuss outcomes, and consider mid-course corrections. Animal Husbandry Ministers from various States and UTs will participate, along with concerned officials.

The livestock sector has shown impressive growth from 2014-15 to 2022-23, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.82%. Its contribution to the Gross Value Added (GVA) in agriculture and allied sectors has increased significantly, rising from 24.36% to 30.22%. In 2022-23, the sector contributed 5.5% to the total GVA, highlighting its vital role in the economy.

India’s milk production has seen a remarkable surge of 57.62% over the past nine years, increasing from 146.3 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 230.60 million metric tonnes in 2022-23. This growth rate, averaging 5.9% annually, significantly surpasses the global average of 2%. Per capita milk availability has also risen from 307 grams per day in 2013-14 to 459 grams per day in 2022-23, exceeding the world average of 325 grams. These achievements underscore the sector’s emergence as a “sunrise sector.”

The Monsoon Meet is anticipated to address various implementation challenges and facilitate discussions on best practices across States. The interactive session will offer a platform for Union Cabinet Minister (FAHD) to engage with Animal Husbandry Ministers, showcase success stories, and share valuable insights.
