Paris: Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, finishing fourth in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event, adding to India’s series of close finishes in this edition of the Games.
Mirabai had previously opened India’s medal account at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a total lift of 202 kg in the same category. Her gold medal-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games, where she lifted 201 kg, set high expectations for Paris. Despite dealing with frequent injuries and limited international competitions, Mirabai achieved an impressive lift of 88 kg in the Snatch.
The Clean & Jerk, however, posed a challenge. Her first attempt at 111 kg was unsuccessful, placing her under significant pressure. She ultimately finished with a total lift of 199 kg, just one kilogram short of the bronze medal position, which was secured with a lift of 200 kg.
Although Mirabai Chanu did not secure a medal, her performance demonstrated her resilience and skill, solidifying her status as one of India’s leading weightlifters.
