Smriti Mandhana named full-time captain of Indian women’s cricket team

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Smriti Mandhana as the new full-time white-ball captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, ushering in a new leadership era following Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision to step down.

Mandhana, one of the most experienced and accomplished players in the Indian side, will now lead the team in both ODIs and T20Is as India enters a new phase of its international journey.

The left-handed opener has been part of the Indian team since 2013 and brings more than a decade of international experience to the leadership role.

Mandhana has already led India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs and has also built an impressive leadership record in domestic and franchise cricket.

Most recently, she captained Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026, strengthening her credentials as a leader.

The BCCI said Mandhana’s experience, leadership qualities and understanding of the game would be valuable as the Indian team builds on the progress made in recent years.

Reacting to her appointment, Mandhana said leading India was a responsibility she would value deeply.

“To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply,” she said.

Mandhana thanked the BCCI, selectors, teammates and supporters for the trust placed in her.

She also acknowledged outgoing captain Harmanpreet Kaur, praising her commitment and contribution to Indian women’s cricket.

“I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey,” Mandhana said.

She added that she was looking forward to working with the team, learning in the new role and contributing to the continued progress of Indian cricket.

BCCI President Mithun Manhas congratulated Mandhana on being entrusted with the leadership responsibility and said her experience and understanding of the game would be important for the team.

The BCCI, he said, had full confidence in Mandhana and expected her to approach the role with the same professionalism and commitment she has displayed throughout her career.

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia also praised Mandhana’s growth as an international cricketer and her leadership experience with RCB in the Women’s Premier League.

Saikia said Mandhana understood the significance of representing India and had the experience and temperament required to handle the responsibility of captaincy.

Mandhana takes charge at a significant moment for Indian women’s cricket, following a period of major achievements under Harmanpreet Kaur.

With her extensive international experience and success as a franchise captain, Mandhana will now be tasked with leading India through its next phase across the white-ball formats.

The BCCI expressed confidence in the new captain and wished Mandhana and the Indian team success as they begin the new chapter.
