Sri Lanka Stuns India to Win Historic ODI Series

Colombo: In a landmark victory, Charith Asalanka-led Sri Lanka triumphed over Rohit Sharma’s India by a commanding 110 runs in the third ODI at Colombo, clinching the series 2-0. This win marks Sri Lanka’s first bilateral ODI series victory over India in 27 years, the last being in 1997.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Sri Lanka set a challenging target of 249 runs. Avishka Fernando was the standout performer with a brilliant 96 off 102 balls, supported by Kusal Mendis (59) and Pathum Nissanka (45). Despite losing seven wickets, Sri Lanka managed to post a competitive total of 248 runs in their 50 overs. India’s bowling attack was led by Riyan Parag, who took three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav each claimed one.

In response, India’s batting lineup crumbled, managing only 138 runs in 26.1 overs. Skipper Rohit Sharma top-scored with 35 off 20 balls, and Washington Sundar contributed 30 off 25 deliveries. However, no other batsman, including the seasoned Virat Kohli, crossed the 20-run mark. Sri Lanka’s bowlers dominated, with Dunith Wellalage taking a remarkable five wickets, and Maheesh Theekshana and Jeffrey Vandersay each claiming two. Asitha Fernando also chipped in with a wicket.

Wellalage’s performance was historic, as he became the first spinner to take five wickets in an ODI against India on more than one occasion, following his previous feat in 2023. Asitha Fernando was named the Player of the Match, while Wellalage earned the Player of the Series award.

The series highlighted India’s struggles against spin, with 27 of their wickets falling to spinners, the most by any team in a bilateral ODI series. The Men in Blue also faced questions over the form of Virat Kohli, who managed just 38 runs across the three matches.

Sri Lanka’s victory was even more impressive considering they were without six key players due to injuries. This win marks a significant achievement for Sri Lankan cricket and a moment of introspection for the Indian team as they head back to the drawing board.

The series opener had ended in a dramatic tie, but Sri Lanka seized the momentum with a 32-run victory in the second ODI, setting the stage for their historic win in the final match. The Colombo pitch, favoring slower bowlers, saw Riyan Parag making his international debut, adding to the excitement.

As the cricketing world celebrates Sri Lanka’s triumph, the focus now shifts to the upcoming fixtures, with both teams looking to regroup and prepare for future challenges.
