Ministry of Panchayati Raj and IIM Amritsar Launch Five-Day Leadership Development Programme for Panchayat Representatives
Amritsar: In a significant move aimed at strengthening rural governance, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management Amritsar (IIM Amritsar), has launched a five-day residential Management Development Programme (MDP). The programme, running from September 2 to September 6, 2024, is designed for elected representatives and functionaries of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) from across ten states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir (UT), Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The MDP’s primary goal is to enhance leadership, management, and governance capabilities among Panchayat representatives and officials, empowering them to deliver better services and contribute to rural development. This initiative underscores the Ministry’s dedication to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of local governance in India.
Participants will engage in a series of expert-led sessions covering topics such as leadership, ethics, rural innovation, financial management, Own Source Revenue (OSR), and the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance. These discussions, combined with case studies and interactive workshops, are expected to provide the participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to lead their communities more effectively.
“Panchayats are the backbone of grassroots governance in rural India, and enhancing the skills of their leaders is crucial for achieving the goal of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India),” a Ministry spokesperson said. The programme is part of a broader effort to ensure Panchayats are well-equipped to meet their constitutional responsibilities, delivering essential services to rural citizens.
A key focus of the training is increasing Own Source Revenue (OSR), a critical aspect of financial independence for Panchayats. By boosting OSR, Panchayats can ensure financial sustainability, empowering them to address local needs and drive development more effectively. The programme also emphasizes modern management practices, aiming to bring corporate-level professionalism to rural governance and ensure the efficient use of resources.
