Ministry of Defence Signs ₹1,560.52 Crore Contract for 47 Bridge Laying Tanks

New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s defense capabilities and the Make-in-India initiative, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a contract with the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), a unit of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL), for the procurement of 47 Tank-72 Bridge Laying Tanks (BLTs). The agreement, valued at ₹1,560.52 crore, was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The Tank-72 BLT is a critical asset for the Indian Army, designed to launch bridges during offensive and defensive operations. This capability enhances the mobility of mechanized forces, ensuring swift movement of tanks and armored vehicles across challenging terrains. By integrating this equipment into its arsenal, the Indian Army will bolster its battlefield flexibility and operational effectiveness.

The contract falls under the “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured)” category, underscoring the government’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The project is expected to significantly contribute to the domestic defense industry, creating employment opportunities and boosting the nation’s economy.

Speaking on the occasion, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening India’s defense preparedness while promoting indigenous production capabilities. The BLT project not only demonstrates India’s ability to develop cutting-edge military technology but also reflects the synergy between the public sector and the nation’s defense needs.
