Medvedev Advances to Wimbledon Semifinals After Defeating Sinner in Marathon Battle

Wimbledon: Daniil Medvedev defeated world number one Jannik Sinner in a dramatic five-set encounter on Tuesday to secure his place in the Wimbledon semi-finals for the second consecutive year. The fifth-ranked Medvedev overcame the gallant challenge of the Italian, who faced a concerning mid-match health scare, to triumph 6-7 (7/9), 6-4, 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 6-3.

The victory not only avenged Medvedev’s loss to Sinner in the Australian Open final earlier this year but also ended his five-match losing streak against the Italian. It marked Medvedev’s ninth Grand Slam semi-final appearance in a four-hour marathon on Centre Court.

Reflecting on the challenging match, Medvedev acknowledged Sinner’s resilience, stating, “I knew if I wanted to beat Jannik it needs to be a tough match. He’s not a guy you can beat easy anymore.”

The encounter started with a tightly contested first set where neither player gave up a break point. Medvedev clinched the set in a tie-break after a grueling 33-shot rally, but faltered with unforced errors in the second set, allowing Sinner to seize the lead temporarily.

In the third set, Sinner faced health issues, prompting a medical timeout after falling behind a break. After a brief delay and medical attention, Sinner courageously battled back to level the set, thrilling the Centre Court crowd with his determination.

Medvedev, however, maintained his composure and secured a crucial break in the final set, which proved decisive in closing out the match. Despite Sinner’s spirited efforts, the Russian’s consistency and strategic play ultimately secured his victory.

Looking ahead, Medvedev will face either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul of the United States in the semi-finals, aiming to advance to his first Wimbledon final.

“I felt at one moment he was not feeling that good but he started feeling better so I’m happy I managed to still stay at a high level,” Medvedev remarked after the match, highlighting the challenging dynamics of their encounter.
