Kuala Lumpur: India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu showcased her dominance by outclassing Korea’s Sim Yu Jin in the second round of the women’s singles at the Malaysia Masters on Thursday. Young shuttler Ashmita Chaliha also made headlines by stunning USA’s Beiwen Zhang in an impressive display.
Sindhu, who last clinched a title at the 2022 Singapore Open, demonstrated her resilience and skill in a grueling 59-minute match against Sim Yu Jin. She emerged victorious with scores of 21-13, 12-21, 21-14. With hopes to end her two-year title drought, Sindhu will next face top seed Han Yue of China.
In another exciting development, 24-year-old Ashmita Chaliha from Guwahati stormed into the quarter-finals of this Super 500 event. She defeated World No. 10 Beiwen Zhang with a scoreline of 21-19, 16-21, 21-12. Ashmita is set to challenge sixth-seeded Chinese player Zhang Yi Man, who is ranked 16th, in her upcoming match.
Mixed Results for Indian Players
However, the day brought mixed fortunes for other Indian players competing in Kuala Lumpur:
Mixed Doubles: The pair of B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy were defeated by the top-seeded Malaysian duo of Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei, with scores of 9-21, 15-21.
Women’s Doubles: Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker lost to the second-seeded Malaysian pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan, 17-21, 11-21.
Men’s Singles: Kiran George was beaten by fifth seed Lee Zii Jia in straight games, 13-21, 18-21.
Women’s Doubles: The seventh-seeded duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand lost a hard-fought match to unseeded Sung Shuo Yun and Yu Chien Hui, 18-21, 22-20, 14-21.
