Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government disclosed shocking statistics on Wednesday, revealing that 1,472 people lost their lives due to lightning strikes in the state over the past five years. Responding to Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi addressed the alarming situation.

During the specified period, lightning strikes, declared a natural disaster by the state government on June 6, 2015, also caused injuries to 145 individuals. In accordance with the Disaster Relief Fund’s terms and conditions, the kin of lightning strike victims are entitled to financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh, Minister Marndi stated.

Furthermore, financial aid is extended to individuals who suffer the loss of eyes or other organs due to lightning. Those with disabilities ranging from 40% to 60% receive Rs 74,000, while those with disabilities exceeding 60% are eligible for Rs 2.5 lakh.

The government has also established a compensation mechanism for individuals undergoing treatment at hospitals after being struck by lightning. A sum of Rs 16,000 is granted to those hospitalized for over a week, and individuals receiving treatment for less than seven days are entitled to Rs 5,400, the minister elaborated.

The disclosure of these figures underscores the need for heightened awareness, preventive measures, and swift response mechanisms to tackle the impact of lightning strikes in the state. The Odisha Government remains committed to providing support to the affected families and individuals, emphasizing the importance of disaster relief efforts.
