Landmark Amendment Allows Women Government employee to Prioritize Children for Family Pension

New Delhi: In a significant stride towards gender-inclusive policies, the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) has introduced a noteworthy amendment to Rule 50 of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Rules, 2021. The latest amendment grants women government servants the authority to nominate their child or children for family pension, elevating their priority over husbands in situations of marital discord.

The preceding regulations designated family pension initially to the surviving spouse of a deceased government servant or retired government servant. However, the recent amendment acknowledges the evolving dynamics of family structures, providing a more equitable approach to family pension distribution.

Under the revised rules, a female government servant now has the prerogative to ensure financial security for her child or children, superseding her husband’s claim. This progressive step takes into account various scenarios, including cases where the woman has initiated divorce proceedings or sought protection under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act or the Indian Penal Code.

V Srinivas, Secretary of the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare, emphasized that the amendment is designed to empower women government servants, offering them greater control over their family’s financial well-being during challenging circumstances.

This forward-looking policy shift reflects the government’s commitment to fostering gender equality and providing robust support systems for women in the workforce. The amendment is poised to make a positive impact on the lives of women government servants, reinforcing a workplace environment that prioritizes their unique needs and challenges.
