KKR Storm into IPL 2024 Final with Dominant Win Over SRH

Ahmedabad: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured their place in the final of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Wednesday. KKR’s bowlers restricted SRH to 159, and their batters comfortably chased down the target, ensuring their fourth appearance in an IPL final and their first since 2021.

Winning the toss, SRH captain Pat Cummins opted to bat first. The decision seemed to backfire immediately as KKR’s Mitchell Starc struck in the second ball of the match, bowling out Travis Head. SRH struggled throughout the powerplay, losing four wickets for just 39 runs. Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, and Shahbaz Ahmed fell cheaply, adding pressure on the batting lineup.

Rahul Tripathi and Heinrich Klaasen provided a glimmer of hope for SRH with a 61-run partnership. Klaasen hit a few big shots, including an 18-run over off Sunil Narine, but SRH’s momentum was short-lived. Klaasen was caught for 32, and a mix-up led to Tripathi’s run-out for 55, leaving SRH reeling at 121 for six.

Captain Pat Cummins attempted to steer the innings, scoring 30 off 24 balls, but SRH could only manage a total of 159. Starc’s three for 34 and Varun Chakaravarthy’s two for 26 were crucial in restricting SRH.

KKR’s chase started aggressively, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine setting the tone. Despite Gurbaz’s dismissal for 23, Venkatesh Iyer joined Narine to maintain the momentum. Narine’s quick 21 and Venkatesh’s powerful hitting ensured KKR reached 63 in the powerplay. Shreyas Iyer then joined Venkatesh to steer KKR towards victory with an unbeaten partnership.

Venkatesh Iyer reached his fifty off 28 balls, while Shreyas Iyer brought up his milestone off 23 balls, both showcasing their batting prowess. Shreyas finished the match with a six over long-on, sealing the win in just 13.4 overs. KKR’s dominant performance left SRH with 38 balls to spare and highlighted their supremacy on the day.
