Low Pressure System Likely to Form in Southwest BoB, IMD Warns

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Tuesday that a low pressure system is expected to form in the southwest Bay of Bengal by Wednesday, potentially impacting weather conditions across the region.

“A low pressure area is very likely to form over southwest Bay of Bengal by May 22. It is very likely to move northeastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. It would continue to move northeastwards and intensify further thereafter,” stated an IMD bulletin.

As the system develops, squally weather with wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph, is expected over the south Bay of Bengal on May 21 and 22. Wind speeds are predicted to increase, reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph over central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from the morning of May 23.

By May 24, wind speeds will extend to the adjoining areas of the North Bay of Bengal, increasing to 50-60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph. The northeast Bay of Bengal, along with adjoining northwest and east-central Bay of Bengal, will experience these conditions from May 25 for the subsequent 24 hours.

The sea condition is anticipated to be moderate to rough over the southwest Bay of Bengal on May 21 and 22. It will turn rough to very rough over central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from May 23.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal from May 23. Those already at sea are urged to return to the coast before May 23 to ensure their safety.

Under the influence of this developing system, light to moderate rainfall is expected over many districts in north Odisha on May 24 and 25.

Meanwhile, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has alerted all district Collectors to remain vigilant and prepared for any eventualities that may arise due to the adverse weather conditions.
