Kargil Vijay Diwas Rajat Jayanti Celebrated with Pride at Air Force Station Bhisiana

Bhisiana: The Air Force Station Bhisiana marked the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas with great pride and fervor, celebrating the bravery, valor, and sacrifices of the Indian Armed Forces. This significant event commemorates India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil conflict, following the culmination of Operation Safed Sagar by the Indian Air Force and Operation Vijay by the Indian Army.

The anniversary holds particular significance for the No. 17 Squadron of the IAF, known as the “Golden Arrows,” which played a pivotal role in the conflict. Operating MiG 21 Type 96 aircraft from Air Force Station Bhisiana, the squadron undertook numerous reconnaissance and strike missions, earning the prestigious ‘Battle Honours’ for its meritorious service. Among the many accolades received, Sqn Ldr Ajay Ahuja was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for his bravery during the operations.

The solemn occasion began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial at AF Stn Bhisiana, led by Air Marshal PK Vohra, Senior Air Staff Officer of Western Air Command. The event was also graced by the presence of former Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa (Retd), Mrs. Alka Ahuja, the spouse of the late Sqn Ldr Ajay Ahuja, Op Safed Sagar awardees, and other IAF officers. The Chief Guest took the opportunity to interact with and honor the next-of-kin of the fallen heroes.

An impressive aerial display followed, featuring a para-drop by the Akash Ganga Skydiving team and a flypast in ‘Vic’ formation by Rafale and Jaguar fighter aircraft. The Mi-17 1V helicopter showcased Slithering and Small Team Insertion and Extraction (STIE) operations, while the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft performed low-level aerobatics. The event also included a flypast in the “Arrow Head” and “Missing Man” formations by MiG-29 aircraft, paying tribute to the brave Air Warriors.

The Air Force Band and Air Warrior Drill Team mesmerized more than 5,000 spectators, including school children, with their scintillating performances. The aerial display and the precision and dedication of the Air Warriors left a lasting impression on the young generation, highlighting the IAF’s exemplary conduct during Operation Safed Sagar.
