Kalinga Studios Set for Major Revamp as CM Mohan Majhi Pushes for World-Class Film Infrastructure

Bhubaneswar, June 2: In a decisive move to revive Odisha’s cinematic legacy, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday visited the iconic Kalinga Studios and directed officials to transform the site into a modern, state-of-the-art film production hub. He instructed the Industries Department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed redevelopment.

Once a pioneering film studio in eastern India, Kalinga Studios was established in 1980 and stood as a symbol of Odia cinema’s golden era. However, decades of neglect, outdated technology, and waning demand led to its gradual decline. Now, with fresh government backing, efforts are underway to restore its former glory.

During his visit, the Chief Minister reviewed the progress of ongoing renovation works and emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive, self-contained production space that caters to all aspects of filmmaking. He highlighted that the revamped studio should serve as both a creative hub and a catalyst for employment generation in the region.

As part of the initial redevelopment phase, several key facilities have been introduced, including a tech building, indoor shooting zones, an entrance plaza, ‘Kalinga Movie Magic’ experience center, village set area, Avenue Land, Community Hall, Snow World, bamboo structures, green spaces, and an iconic landmark installation.

CM Majhi underscored that the modernization of Kalinga Studios is not just a cultural initiative but also an economic one. “The revival of this studio will boost Odia cinema, attract new talent, and position Odisha as a film-friendly destination on the national map,” he said. He assured that all future development will be planned in consultation with filmmakers, producers, and other industry stakeholders.

The Chief Minister was joined by Industries and Skill Development Minister Sampad Chandra Swain. Additional Chief Secretary Hemant Sharma briefed the team on the project’s status, while Samarth Verma, Managing Director of the Odisha Film Development Corporation (OFDC), and Bhupendra Singh Poonia, MD of IDCO, were also present.

The Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO), which is spearheading the studio’s transformation, aims to deliver a facility equipped with modern amenities that can accommodate a wide range of productions—from regional cinema to large-scale commercial films.
