Talcher Railway Station gets ₹13-crore makeover under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Bhubaneswar: Talcher Railway Station in Odisha’s Angul district has been redeveloped into a modern and passenger-friendly transport hub under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), with upgraded infrastructure, improved passenger amenities and design elements showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The station, redeveloped at an estimated cost of ₹13 crore, is among the 59 railway stations in Odisha being upgraded under the Centre’s flagship station redevelopment programme. It is also one of the stations scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17.

The redevelopment includes a new station building, a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge equipped with lifts to ensure barrier-free access, widened approach roads for smoother traffic movement and upgraded platforms with improved shelters. Passenger amenities have also been enhanced through renovated waiting halls, modern toilets, improved circulating and parking areas, and standardised passenger information signage for easier navigation.

Apart from infrastructure improvements, the station has been designed to reflect the cultural identity of the region. The redeveloped premises feature artistic elements inspired by Sambalpuri handloom, Dalkhai and Sambalpuri folk traditions, offering visitors a glimpse of western Odisha’s rich heritage.

The upgraded station also serves as a gateway to several prominent tourist destinations, including the Satkosia Tiger Reserve, Deulajhari Hot Springs and ancient temples. Visitors can also experience Odisha’s traditional cuisine, including Pakhala Bhata, Chhena Poda and Dalma.

The redevelopment is expected to improve passenger convenience, enhance accessibility and strengthen regional connectivity, while supporting tourism and economic activities in the Talcher region.

The transformation of Talcher Railway Station forms part of Indian Railways’ broader initiative to modernise railway infrastructure by creating safer, smarter and future-ready stations that combine contemporary passenger facilities with local architectural and cultural identity.
