Justice Surya Kant to Take Charge as 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24

New Delhi: Justice Surya Kant, one of the most respected voices in the Indian judiciary, has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI). The appointment, announced through an official communiqué by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), will take effect from November 24, 2025.
From the quiet lanes of Petwar village in Haryana’s Hisar district to the highest judicial office in the country, Justice Surya Kant’s four-decade-long career stands as a testament to integrity, reform, and public service.
Born on February 10, 1962, Justice Kant completed his education at Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and began practising law in 1984. Known for his intellect and fairness, he made history in 2000 by becoming the youngest Advocate General of Haryana, setting the tone for a career defined by dedication to justice and progressive legal reform.
He later served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court of India in 2019. Over the years, he has earned recognition for his balanced judgments, human-centric approach, and efforts to strengthen judicial accountability.
Currently, the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Justice Surya Kant, has played a pivotal role in expanding access to justice for the underprivileged and promoting legal awareness across the nation.
As he prepares to assume the role of Chief Justice of India, Justice Kant is expected to lead the judiciary with a renewed emphasis on accessibility, innovation, and empathy, reinforcing the core values of India’s democratic and constitutional framework.
