Jasprit Bumrah Might be Rested as India Faces Selection Dilemma for Rajkot Test
Vizag: After delivering a stellar performance and being declared the Player of the Match in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah may be given a much-needed break for the upcoming third Test in Rajkot. The national selectors, in consultation with the team management, are considering the option to rest Bumrah to ensure he returns recharged for the final two Tests of the series.
Bumrah’s outstanding display in the just-concluded Test saw him claim nine wickets for a mere 91 runs, proving instrumental in India’s victory. However, concerns have arisen about the toll the intense workload may have taken on Bumrah, who bowled over 32 overs across four demanding days. The selectors recognize the need for him to refresh and recharge, especially after his significant contribution in the previous Test in Hyderabad, where he bowled nearly 25 overs.
In the event of Bumrah’s potential rest, Mohammed Siraj, who was given a similar break for the second Test, is expected to be recalled by the selectors. Siraj is likely to lead the pace attack in the third game before reuniting with Bumrah for the final two Tests.
Managing the workload of fast bowlers has become crucial, especially with Mohammed Shami still on the sidelines due to an ankle injury. Shami’s recovery period, as reported by Cricbuzz, is expected to be longer than initially anticipated, further emphasizing the need for strategic player management.
Additionally, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is unlikely to be fully fit for the Rajkot Test, requiring additional time for recovery from a hamstring injury sustained in the first Test. While speculations suggest he might miss the entire series, there remains a glimmer of hope for his comeback during the ongoing series.
The return of star batter Virat Kohli remains uncertain due to a family emergency that has taken him abroad. Coach Rahul Dravid stated that the team management will connect with Kohli to determine his availability for the rest of the series. AB de Villiers shed light on Kohli’s situation, revealing that the Indian captain is expecting his second child.
In more positive news, KL Rahul is expected to make a comeback for the remainder of the five-Test series. The third Test in Rajkot is scheduled to commence on February 15.
