ITU and FAO Workshop Explores Digital Agriculture’s Role in Transforming Global Food Production

New Delhi:  Working towards revolutionizing global agriculture practices and tackling challenges posed by climate change and a burgeoning world population, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is joining forces with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Together, they are set to host a pivotal Workshop titled “Cultivating tomorrow: Advancing digital agriculture through IoT and AI.”

Scheduled for March 18, 2024, the workshop will be held at the National Agricultural Science Complex (NASC), ICAR in the National Capital, India. The event, hosted by the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, aims to explore the transformative potential of Agriculture 4.0.

Anticipating the participation of around 200 delegates, including international attendees, the workshop will serve as a platform for sharing insights and experiences in leveraging technology to reshape agriculture. With a focus on emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and their intersection with agriculture, participants will delve into strategies to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and resilience across the entire agricultural value chain.

The event will not only facilitate knowledge exchange but will also witness the release of a Technical report titled “Revolutionizing Agriculture: The Digital Transformation of Farming.” This report is poised to become a cornerstone for stakeholders in the agricultural sector, providing guidance on harnessing technology for informed decision-making and sustainable food production.

One of the key objectives of the workshop is to showcase how technologies like IoT, AI/ML, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can empower farmers with real-time data, predictive analytics, and actionable insights. By integrating these cutting-edge technologies into traditional farming practices, stakeholders aim to address pressing global challenges while ensuring food security and agricultural sustainability.

Following the workshop, on March 19, 2024, the 9th meeting of the ITU/FAO Focus Group on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) for Digital Agriculture” (FG-AI4A) will take place at the same venue. This continued discourse underscores the commitment of global organizations towards fostering innovation and collaboration in the realm of digital agriculture.

Participation in the workshop is open to ITU Member States, Sector Members, Associates, ITU Academia, and individuals from countries that are members of the ITU, as well as members of international, regional, and national organizations. The event will be conducted in a hybrid mode, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility to a wide range of stakeholders.

As the world grapples with the complex challenges of feeding a growing population amidst environmental uncertainties, the convergence of technology and agriculture emerges as a beacon of hope. Through initiatives like the ITU and FAO Workshop, stakeholders are poised to shape the future of farming, ushering in an era of digital innovation and sustainable food production.
