INSV Tarini Sets Sail on Landmark Transoceanic Expedition with All-Women Crew

Goa: In a groundbreaking feat, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini has set sail on a historic transoceanic expedition with an all-women crew, reaffirming the prowess of the Indian Navy and breaking gender barriers on the high seas.

Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini commenced its remarkable journey from INS Mandovi, Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius on February 28, 2024, under the aegis of the Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA). Led by Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A, this transoceanic sortie marks a significant milestone in naval ocean sailing history, showcasing the Nari Shakti’s strength and determination in the maritime domain.

This undertaking is a vital part of their preparation for the upcoming circumnavigation of the globe, scheduled later this year. Over the last two and a half years, the officers have undergone rigorous training following a meticulous selection process. Before the present expedition, the officers, as part of a crew of six, sailed from Goa to Mauritius and back in 2022. They also completed an expedition from Goa to Rio De Janeiro via Cape Town and back last year. Subsequently, the officers undertook a sailing expedition from Goa to Port Blair and back in double-handed mode.

This current expedition serves as their final consolidation voyage before the circumnavigation planned to commence in September this year.

The distinguished yachtsman, Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), KC, NM, who has circumnavigated the globe non-stop on sailing boats twice, flagged off the expedition. Commander Tomy has been mentoring the two women officers for the last six months. In his address, he expressed pride in flagging off this monumental expedition, symbolizing the spirit of adventure and resilience that defines the Indian Navy. He exuded confidence in the capabilities of the two women officers and wished them fair winds and smooth seas on their historic voyage.

The transoceanic expedition of INSV Tarini marks a significant leap in India’s maritime endeavors, showcasing the nation’s growing prominence in global maritime activities and commitment to gender equality on the high seas. It stands as a testament to the Indian Navy’s dedication to fostering excellence and diversity within its ranks.

The boat is expected to reach Port Louis, Mauritius, on March 20, 2024.
