Berhampur/Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Driving Training and Research in Berhampur marked its first anniversary with a ceremony held at its Palur Hills-based facility. Odisha’s Commerce and Transport Minister, Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, attended as the Chief Guest, highlighting the state’s efforts to reduce road accidents through driver training initiatives like the SuVahak program.
Minister Jena praised the success of the Palur Training Centre and emphasized the state’s plan to expand government-run driving training centers. “Our goal is to reduce road accidents by equipping drivers with the necessary skills, and the SuVahak training program is a key part of this effort,” said the Minister. He encouraged broader participation in the program, emphasizing its importance in improving road safety.
The institute provides free-of-cost training to drivers, including accommodation and meals. Trainees receive a driving license upon completion of the 30-day course, as well as a stipend of ₹3,000. The center also focuses on the physical and mental well-being of trainees by offering daily yoga and exercise sessions, and it includes a library for additional learning resources.
Since its inception, the Palur facility has trained 823 heavy vehicle drivers, with 166 securing jobs in various government and private organizations. Additionally, 5,000 new drivers and over 22,000 existing drivers have completed refresher courses at the center, as well as at other locations in Chhatia, Bonai, and Keonjhar. Notably, 30 skilled drivers have secured employment in Japan.
The 20-acre Palur facility boasts modern infrastructure, including air-conditioned classrooms, dormitory accommodations for 140 trainees, and a two-kilometer driving track with road signs for practical lessons. The center can train 1,200 heavy vehicle drivers and refresh 4,000 drivers annually.
Ashok Leyland has partnered with the Transport Department to provide the machinery and trainer facilities, while the department covers the operational costs. The program also includes monthly refresher courses for licensed drivers.
Additional Transport Commissioner Dipti Ranjan Patra, Joint Transport Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, and officials from Ashok Leyland were present at the event, which concluded with a cultural performance by trainees and local artists. Minister Jena also planted a tree to commemorate the occasion.
