India’s First Ready-to-Drink Fig Juice, Made from GI-Tagged Purandar Figs, Exported to Poland

Bhubaneswar: In a significant milestone for Indian agriculture, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the export of India’s first ready-to-drink fig juice to Poland. The juice, crafted from GI-tagged Purandar Figs, was flagged off by APEDA Chairman Shri Abhishek Dev on August 1, 2024, in the presence of key stakeholders. The shipment departed via the Hamburg port in Germany, marking a major achievement in promoting India’s unique agro-products on the global stage.

The journey of this innovative fig juice began at the APEDA Pavilion during SIAL 2023, an international trade showcase held in Greater Noida, New Delhi. The product, developed by Purandar Highlands Farmers Producer Company Ltd., captured significant attention at the event, winning an award and establishing its potential in the international market.

APEDA has played a crucial role in supporting the development and export of this product. Since the initial export of fresh GI-tagged Purandar Figs to Hamburg in 2022, APEDA has closely collaborated with smallholder farmers to bring this product to fruition. The fig juice, which has been granted a provisional patent, represents a groundbreaking innovation in the agricultural sector.

Further expanding its global reach, the fig juice was showcased at Macfrut 2024 in Rimini, Italy, with APEDA’s support. The product received positive feedback from international buyers, leading to an inquiry from MG Sales SP in Wroclaw, Poland, which culminated in this landmark export.

This achievement underscores the potential of Indian agro-products and the vital role of Farmers Producer Companies (FPCs) in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and exports. The success of this export highlights the importance of research and development in enhancing the value of India’s agricultural exports on the global stage.
